It was the first day of the new millennium and he greeted it by walking away from a $20 an hour job to start his own business. He had never been in business for himself before and the endless possibilities were exhilarating and exciting. The man had planned well for his departure and began his new business with a few prime clients in place. With hard work and perseverance, he replaced his previous salary within two years. Then the unthinkable happened. Like the orchestrated detonation of a condemned building, his business collapsed in 2002 due to a major shift in his industry. The bottom fell out and there was nothing the man could do to stop it.
His income dropped by 80%, and in spite of 13 attempts to go back to a “real job”, every opportunity fell through. Relying on food stamps to feed his family, his house in active foreclosure, the man knew there had to be another way. In spite of the bleak outlook, he knew he had made the right choice to start his own business. With a renewed commitment to himself and his family to find the answer he was looking for, the man continued to push ahead with a dream of something more.
Slowly, he rebuilt his business, saved his house and got off food stamps. But in spite of all his hard work and effort, the answer the man searched for alluded him. A year later, when a stranger’s comment reminded him of something he had forgotten from ten years previous, a spark of curiosity captured the man’s imagination with an idea of possibility. How could he have so easily forgotten a “miracle” that had saved his family once before? With little outside help and a lot of hard work, the man ventured into a brand-new marketplace with a vision for the future and his first book in hand. That was five years ago and that man was me. The discovery (or rather, re-discovery, was the Public Domain.
In the past five years, Public Domain content has changed my life. Through the products I’ve created from Public Domain content, I’ve been able to generate a consistent six-figure income every year. The reason why that’s so amazing and such good news for you is that the copyright laws haven’t changed and Public Domain content is more accessible now than ever before. And so I have decided that, in honor of my 5-year anniversary in working with Public Domain content, I am going to teach a brand-new series that reveals the blueprints I’ve discovered and developed to create profit-pulling products from Public Domain content.
In “Public Domain Blueprint,” I am going to reveal the best strategies, the best blueprints for turning the proven content from the Public Domain into laser-focused, profit-producing products using every media type available: Books, Serials, Patents, Government, Images, Audio & Video. You might think that I’ve shared all my secrets about the Public Domain, but you would be wrong. In “Public Domain Blueprint”, however, they all come out. I’m holding nothing back.

It’s the perfect time to invest in your business and future by investing in yourself…and for the next two days, you can invest less and gain more!

PS: On Tuesday, I’m revealing all my secrets to creating amazing book and product cover designs. Watch for the announcement. This will be a first!
I’ve been teaching a webinar series for my Step-by-Step Members lately on creating different types of physical products from Public Domain content. And so, for today’s post, I thought it might be beneficial for you if I listed some of my personal favorite resources for getting physical products created.
First of all…WHY physical products? Aren’t digital products easier to manage and more profitable? Yes and no! The truth is that, in spite of the rise of the iPad and other mobile devices, many people still enjoy having a tangable, physical “something” to hold and stick on the bookshelf or share with a friend. And besides, try “wearing” a piece of digital art…grin. Physical products also carry a certain sense of “realness” that digital products don’t have. Then there is the perceived value piece of it. Try an experiment…tell someone you wrote an e-book, and then tell them you also wrote a print book. Somehow, having a book in “print” carries greater weight in the mind of the reader because you’ve been “published.”
So what types of physical products are able to be created using Public Domain content? With, with the advent of many different types of on-demand technologies, there are quite a few types of physical products you can create. As recent as just a few years ago, many of these technologies either didn’t exist or were crazy expensive. All that has changed now and will continue to evolve…for our benefit!
Some of the most popular physical product creation methods available to you include:
- Books (paperback, hardback, photo books, etc.)
- DVDs (movies, digital collections, software, etc.)
- CDs (music, digital files, software, etc.)
- Binders (workbooks, course modules and more)
- Apparel (t-shirts, totes, jackets, hoodies, etc.)
- Prints (posters, maps, artwork, photographs, calendars, etc.)
- Other Printed Pieces (magazines, calendars, greeting cards, etc.)
- Household Items (drinkware, window decor, tapestries, etc.)
As you can see, there are quite a few options for you to choose from for creating physical products. Please bear this important point in mind though…if you don’t actually CREATE the products, you can’t make money from them. Seems obvious enough, but you’d be surprised how many DON’T take action. So to make “taking action” as EASY as possible, here is a list of some of my favorite sites for creating products in a “physical” way. As Olivia Newton John once sang…”Let’s get physical…” lol.
I’ll keep this brief…I know the weekend is here!

Now more than ever before, the key to reaching your audience is to provide them with high-quality, ongoing beneficial content. The day of junk articles and spun content are pretty much over (thank God!). If you think about, it makes sense that your reader would WANT to read something of quality…that’s what YOU want too, right? Of course you do! Nothing you hate worse than to find a website that “hopefully” has the answer you’re looking for, only to find out it’s a spam site designed to get traffic and siphon your money. There will always be those who try to scam the system (not to mention you and I) but you know better…especially when you consider that your content marketing has a great friend in the Public Domain!
When you consider that there are over 85 million books, 200,000+ magazine titles, 5.5 million patents, billions of images and more, content for your site (not to mention your articles, products, autoresponders, etc.) should be a no-brainer! Think about this…we are talking about PROVEN content! It’s already been written by experts and read by thousands if not tens of thousands of readers (just like your target audience). This content was subjected to peer-review, editors and publishers whose desire was to share the best writing on the topic at hand. WHY? Because they knew that if the articles in their magazine sucked, readership would drop and their advertisers would lose money. If the books they published were crap, no one would buy them. Remember, there was no Internet 50+ years ago…LOTS of people read so publishers HAD to produce quality content. Content marketing was just as relevant then as it is today!
Honestly, as a content publisher, you really have NO excuse to struggle with writing blog posts or offering quality content to your readers, prospects and customers! To gain further insight on how to use Public Domain content as a part of your content marketing strategy, be sure to check out these related articles found elsewhere on my blog:
Stories of shapeshifting exist in every culture and take on many forms of transformation…from Zeus in Greek Mythology to the recent Twilight series where members of the Quileute tribe shapeshift into wolves. Even in our childhood stories we see the Beast transform into a Prince in “Beauty and the Beast”…and let’s not forget the infamous Frog looking for that special kiss. But what do these “myths” of shapeshifting have to do with Public Domain content? Plenty!
Content from the Public Domain…whether it exists in the form of a book, a magazine, a photograph or something else…was already established, proven if you will, in that form. The books were already published and read by thousands or tens of thousands of people…the same with magazines. But because that book or magazine is now in the Public Domain, we can legally use its content for anything we choose without any type of royalty or legal recourse. And there are a LOT of ways that we can adapt, or shapeshift, that content.
As an example, take a look at the text found HERE. It’s an article I scanned from a 1950’s Popular Photography magazine in the Public Domain. It’s a great article, and certainly relevant still today. Now, in its original form, it was a magazine article. How can we shapeshift that content into new forms? Here are some thoughts…
- A Blog Post
- An Article on Article Sites
- Break-up for an Autoresponder Series
- A Free Report
- Record an Audio Version for a Podcast
- Turn into a Powerpoint Slide Video
- Read Live on a Video Camera
- Discuss on BlogTalkRadio
- Include in an E-Zine
- Use as a Chapter of an E-Book or Print book
- Create a Squidoo Lens from It
- Re-Publish in a New Print Magazine
And so, as you can see from the dozen samples above, it’s pretty easy to shapeshift just about ANY text content from the Public Domain into a new form…whether free or as a money-making product. The same is true for images. Take the image of Sitting Bull shown below, for instance. On the left is the original image from the Public Domain. On the right is a new image I created in Photoshop from the original.
Now, with this new image (or even with the old one quite honestly), I could shapeshift it into…
- A T-Shirt Design
- A Poster
- A Skateboard Design
- A Blanket or Tapestry
- A Mousepad
- A Coffee Mug
- Any of the Other Products on CafePress or Zazzle
- A Postage Stamp Design
- An Illustration for an Article
- A Fine Art Canvas Framed Print
I think you get the picture (no pun intended). And the best part is that I can create nearly endless variations of new art based on that one original photograph from the Public Domain. Shapeshifting at its best!
So, hopefully, this post has inspired you to consider doing a little shapeshifting of your own. The possibilities are are waiting for your own innovation and creativity. And like it says in my blog header graphic:
Proven Content + Creative Innovation = Successful, NEW Products!

Creating your first audio product can be intimidating…even without the technology issues. Maybe you’re not sure how to start, or what to say, or if what you have to say even matters. One of the BEST sources I’ve seen to help you decide what to talk about or where to begin is by studying magazine and tabloid headlines to look for idea formulas. Here is what I mean:
The January 2010 issue of “In Style” magazine has a headline, “145 No-Cost Ways to Improve Your Look.”
Now to create an idea formula from this headline, simply remove, the defining elements to end up with:
“____ (number) No-Cost Ways to Improve Your _______.”
Let’s say that you want to create an audio product or podcast for your gardening niche. Using the idea formula we just created, you could come up with something like:
“7 No-Cost Ways to Improve Your Tomato Yields”
“10 No-Cost Ways to Improve Your Soil Quality”
Or a further variation without the word “Your”…
“5 No-Cost Ways to Improve Insect Control”
Let’s look at another niche…model railroading:
“7 No-Cost Ways to Improve Your Scenery-Building Skills”
Now this is just ONE idea formula from one magazine issue! There are hundreds of other ideas out there waiting for you. You can easily string together a series of new idea formulas inserting your niche topic to create ideas for dozens of audio podcasts and audio products. Use your imagination! Oh, and if you don’t feel like taking a trip to the bookstore or grocery store, buzz over to Magazines.com to access all the latest covers.
Try this one:
“7 No-Cost Ways to Improve Your Audios Using Idea Formulas”
Now, this “idea formula” strategy will work for more than just audio creation. It also serves as a great method for creating blog post and article titles as well as ideas for video. Have a Blog Talk Radio show? This strategy is perfect for developing show ideas to grow your audience.
Create Audio Products shows you how to easily make the jump into creating your OWN successful audios. In it, I share my own proven strategies and methods for creating audio products. I also reveal stealth methods for using proven content from the Public Domain to create a limitless supply of niche-specific audios that you’ll be proud to call your own! Grab your own copy of Create Audio Products today (if you haven’t already) because the price is going to be increased on Monday, January 25th.
In this episode, I share a cool strategy for using niche content from Public Domain magazines to create live action videos.
After a little bit of introspection, I’ve concluded that I’m a bit of a magazine junkie. I can’t help myself…I love ’em…and for a LOT of reasons. And because of my fondness for magazines, they’ve played a big role in my business as well. They can help your business as well in some ways you may have not considered before now. Here are a few quick business-building “magazine” strategies for your consideration.
It’s no big secret that one of the keys to success in business, online or offline, is understanding the interest and needs of your customers. And while there are numerous ways to identify these consumer trends (keyword research, Ebay and Amazon buying trends, Twitter trends, etc.), one of my favorite ways to investigate consumer trends is to take a look at magazines. The short and concise revelation of trends with magazines is simply this: If there aren’t any (or many) magazines about a given topic or niche, then it’s likely that there is little interest there for Joe Consumer.
While this axiom is certainly not exclusive in its scope, it certainly rings true in most cases. If there is massive consumer interest in a given niche, there will likely be a large number of magazines to support that interest. Take golf for instance. Golf is considered an “evergreen” niche…one that will always be popular. Magazines.com offers no less than ten magazines specific to golf…Amazon.com offers even more with all the international editions they include. So just by this statistic alone, you could easily say that this is a strong, albeit competitive, market to look at for product creation.
simple trip to Borders or Barnes and Noble can offer great research insights for what’s hot and what’s not. But in case you want to stay close to home, here are the best places online to see which niches boast a strong (or weak) presence in the magazine marketplace.
Magazines.com – Features more than 2,000 magazine publications on their site and makes it easy to identify the most popular magazines in any given topic.
Magazine.org – The official website for Magazine Publishers of America. This is a great site to explore for identifying trends in magazine offerings, ad spending, popular topics and more.
Product Creation and Blog Content
I have written and taught in some detail about the significance and benefit of using content from magazines in the Public Domain as a part of your product creation or blog posting process. With less than one percent of all magazines published before 1964 now in the Public Domain, these magazines are a virtually untapped goldmine for fresh content for your products, blogs and articles. While I go into great detail how to find and use magazines from the Public Domain in my popular product, Limitless Blog Content, I thought I’d share a few places to discover old magazines online. Discovery is an important part of the process, of course, because you can’t find what you don’t know to look for, except by accident. And I prefer to be deliberate in my business.
I often talk about using Ebay as a great source for older magazines, and the truth is that it is perhaps the best online source for old magazines there is. A great place to start on Ebay is right here in their Old Magazines section. There are also a few other online sources for identifying and locating older magazines as well. While I have not shared these before now, I will tell you that they are worthy of your investigation.
The first website I’d like to share is Past Paper. They offer over a million rare and back-issues of magazines for sale on the site. Not all the magazines they carry are in the Public Domain, but I’ve found them to be a great resource for tracking down magazines on a given topic. The second website is Used Magazines. I share this one hesitantly because the magazines they offer are primarily focused in men’s niches (like cars and motorcycles) but also include adult magazines as well…so visit at your own risk. They do, however, offer a great selection of automobile and motorcycle-related magazines.
For more insights and strategies on how to use Magazines to enhance and build your products, blogs, articles and more, be sure to check out Limitless Blog Content, the definitive, step-by-step guide to Public Domain magazines.
I recently came across a project that, like Google Books, is committed to building a massive digital library containing millions of volumes. Here is what the mission statement from their website:
“As a digital repository for the nation’s great research libraries, HathiTrust brings together the immense collections of partner institutions.
HathiTrust was conceived as a collaboration of the thirteen universities of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation and the University of California system to establish a repository for these universities to archive and share their digitized collections. Partnership is open to all who share this grand vision.”
Of course, when I read announcements like that, you know what I am thinking…Public Domain books! Of HathiTrust’s 4.6 million volumes already scanned, 708,000 are in the Public Domain and available at their site in full text view. While they do not offer full text downloads, the books and periodicals are available in PDF and TXT formats as individual pages. You can search the the HathiTrust Catalog HERE:
